[Remote] Financial Controller
Note: The job is a remote job and is open to candidates in USA. Waterloo Turf is one of the fastest growing home services franchise brands in the country, and they are seeking a Controller to manage the financial backbone of the organization. This role involves overseeing financial reporting, royalty collection, and onboarding new franchise owners while working closely with the CEO and leadership team.
Responsibilities
- Own the month-end close process and prepare accurate, timely financial statements
- Maintain the general ledger, accounts receivable, and accounts payable
- Manage general financial reporting, planning, and budgeting in partnership with leadership
- Run payroll and process bonuses and commissions for corporate team members
- Maintain cash flow models and fulfill ad hoc financial reporting requests from leadership
- Coordinate with external tax advisors on federal, state, and franchise-related tax filings
- Establish and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets
- Track, calculate, and collect royalty payments across the franchise network
- Invoice franchisees for royalty fees and technology fees on a recurring basis
- Reconcile royalty and marketing fund contributions against franchisee reported sales
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition for initial franchise fees under ASC606
- Manage ad fund accounting and reporting separately from operating financials
- Monitor franchisee financial compliance and flag discrepancies
- Handle the financial setup of new franchise owners from signing through launch
- Invoice and collect initial franchise fees and territory fees
- Coordinate with operations and legal to ensure all financial onboarding steps are completed accurately and on time
- Build and maintain scalable processes as unit count grows
Skills
- 5 plus years of accounting or finance experience, with at least 2 years in a controller or senior accounting role
- Strong understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and ASC 606 revenue recognition
- Experience in a franchise, multi-unit, or multi-location business environment
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online (QBO), Xero, or similar accounting platforms
- Experience with Ramp or similar expense management platforms
- Advanced Excel Skills
- Detail oriented, highly organized, and comfortable operating in a fast moving environment
- Strong communicator who can translate financial information for non-finance stakeholders
- Experience working inside a single-brand franchisor, particularly one that has gone through a private equity transaction or rapid unit growth phase
- Familiarity with franchise disclosure documents and FDD-related financial reporting
- CPA designation
