Job Overview

We are seeking an experienced and skilled Senior Academic Counselor to join our University Academic Advising team. This is an outstanding opportunity for a professional academic advisor to provide holistic advising services to undergraduate students, empowering them to identify their interests and match their personal strengths with educational and career opportunities. The successful candidate will have a strong passion for student success, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic and evolving environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one advising to individual students within an assigned advising caseload, including educating students about the relationship between their personal strengths and interests, and opportunities in the University curriculum and beyond
  • Empower students to cultivate a sense of purpose in their undergraduate education and help them overcome challenges that hinder academic performance
  • Assist students in integrating their educational and career plans, concentrating attention on developing universal skills, and guide students through University systems to avoid or overcome administrative problems
  • Foster student understanding of academic major requirements to facilitate successful realization of academic, personal, and professional goals
  • Counsel students dropped from the University for low scholarship and outreach to students exploring their academic interests
  • Serve as lead for advising services, including pre-health and pre-law, liaison to Schools offering STEM programs, and teach the TUNIV 250 course
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with team members, major advisors, and campus colleagues to help students integrate their academic, career, and personal goals

Essential Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and 3 years of culturally competent academic advising or related experience with students in a diverse higher education setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information succinctly to individuals and groups; experience with public speaking
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and work a flexible schedule with some evening and/or weekend work
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, evolving environment
  • Experience using computer programs such as MS Word, Access, and Excel; must be comfortable with data and proficient with computer technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree and 2 years of academic advising or related higher education experience
  • Successful experience in developing and providing programs/services of significant value to students and the institution
