Tax & Accounting Manager - Remote or Hybrid
We are seeking an experienced Tax & Accounting Manager to support our growing tax, bookkeeping, and small business advisory firm. This role is ideal for a strong tax and accounting professional who enjoys working with small business owners, reviewing tax returns, supporting the bookkeeping dept, providing tax planning guidance, improving internal processes, and helping build systems inside a growing firm. This position may be remote or hybrid for someone local to the Corona, CA area. For the right person, this role has the potential to grow into a long-term leadership position, with possible future partnership and/or buyout opportunities. Position Overview The Tax & Accounting Manager will assist with tax preparation, tax review, bookkeeping oversight, client advisory support, team training, workflow management, and process improvement. We are looking for someone who can think critically, communicate professionally, identify bottlenecks, and help strengthen the systems needed to support a growing firm. The ideal candidate has at least 5 years of tax and accounting experience and is comfortable working with individuals, entrepreneurs, and small business clients. This person should be able to review work, identify tax and bookkeeping issues, communicate clearly with clients, provide guidance to team members, and help the firm maintain high-quality standards. - Part-time to start, with potential for increased hours, moving to salary, etc.

Key Responsibilities
Responsibilities may include:
- Prepare and review individual and business tax returns
- Review 1040, Schedule C, rental, S-corp, partnership, and corporate tax returns
- Review bookkeeping and financial statements for tax readiness. You may be asked to assist with bookkeeping work until additional staff is hired.
- Identify tax issues, missing information, and compliance concerns before returns are finalized
- Assist with tax planning and estimated tax projections
- Support entity structure discussions, including sole proprietor vs. S-corp considerations
- Review S-corp reasonable compensation concerns, shareholder distributions, and basis issues
- Review partnership and S-corp returns for accuracy and completeness
- Assist with California tax compliance matters, including LLCs, corporations, and state filing requirements
- Review client books for accuracy, including bank reconciliations, balance sheet issues, loan accounts, payroll, owner draws, and misclassified transactions
- Help prepare client questions and open-item lists
- Communicate with clients regarding tax documents, bookkeeping issues, tax planning needs, and filing deadlines
- Support and train junior tax preparers, bookkeepers, and administrative team members
- Provide review notes and guidance to team members in a clear and professional manner
- Help manage tax season workflow, deadlines, extensions, and client follow-up
- Document work clearly inside the firm’s systems
- Help maintain quality control across tax and accounting engagements
- Support advisory services for small business clients
- Be open to wearing various hats within the first 6-12 months in this role
Process Improvement & Workflow Support This role will also help improve the firm’s internal systems, workflows, and client service processes. Responsibilities may include:
- Helping identify bottlenecks in the tax, bookkeeping, and client communication workflow
- Recommending improvements to tax preparation and review processes
- Helping develop and refine tax return review checklists
- Supporting improvements to bookkeeping review procedures
- Assisting with TaxDome workflow organization, job stages, templates, and task tracking
- Helping create or improve internal SOPs for tax, bookkeeping, client onboarding, document collection, and deadline management
- Providing feedback on how to improve team communication and accountability
- Helping train team members on updated processes and procedures
- Supporting quality control so returns, books, and client files are handled consistently
- Helping create a smoother client experience from intake through final delivery
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years of tax and accounting experience
- Experience preparing and reviewing individual and business tax returns (You must be able to work through corporation and partnership tax returns)
- Strong understanding of small business taxation
- Experience with Schedule C, rental properties, S-corps, partnerships, and corporations
- Understanding of payroll, reasonable compensation, shareholder distributions, and basis issues
- Ability to review bookkeeping and financial statements for tax accuracy
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to explain tax and accounting issues in plain English
- Highly organized and deadline-driven
- Able to work independently in a remote or hybrid environment
- Comfortable working with a growing small business firm
- Willing to follow firm processes and help improve systems
- Strong attention to detail and professional judgment
Preferred Qualifications
- CPA, EA, or CPA/EA candidate preferred
- Experience in public accounting or a tax firm environment
- Experience reviewing staff-prepared returns
- Experience with ProConnect, TaxDome, QuickBooks Online, Google Workspace, or similar systems is a plus
- Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required
- Experience with tax planning and advisory services
- Experience managing tax season workflow and client deadlines
- Interest in improving processes, workflows, checklists, and internal systems
- Interest in long-term leadership, firm growth, or potential future partnership
