Role Overview
We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Big Data Engineer to join our Remote Engineering team. In this role, you will design, build, and optimize large‑scale data pipelines that power critical analytics, machine‑learning models, and real‑time decision‑making across the organization. You will work closely with product owners, data scientists, and senior architects to translate business requirements into robust, scalable solutions that run on cloud platforms such as GCP or AWS.
This position is a full‑time, remote opportunity based in the United States (preferred location: Phoenix, AZ) with a competitive hourly rate of $28 per hour. You will be part of a collaborative, agile environment where your ideas are valued, and you have the autonomy to choose the best tools and technologies for each challenge.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement end‑to‑end data pipelines using Hadoop, Hive, Spark, and PySpark to ingest, transform, and store petabytes of structured and unstructured data.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams to gather requirements, define data models, and ensure alignment with business objectives.
- Develop and maintain real‑time streaming solutions leveraging Kafka, Flink, or similar technologies to support low‑latency analytics.
- Write clean, modular, and well‑documented code in Java, Python, or Scala, adhering to best practices for version control (GitHub/Bitbucket) and CI/CD pipelines.
- Conduct thorough code reviews, automated testing, and performance profiling to guarantee reliability and scalability.
- Automate deployment, monitoring, and alerting of data services using container orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud‑native tools.
- Identify and remediate bottlenecks, data quality issues, and security vulnerabilities across the data lifecycle.
- Mentor junior engineers and lead small agile squads, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.
- Stay abreast of emerging technologies, contribute to open‑source projects, and champion innovative approaches within arenaflex.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (or equivalent professional experience).
- Minimum 3 years of hands‑on experience in big data development, including design and implementation of data pipelines.
- Proficiency with Hadoop ecosystem tools such as Hive, HDFS, and Spark (including PySpark and Spark‑SQL).
- Strong command of SQL and data‑warehouse concepts, with experience optimizing complex queries and joins.
- Solid programming skills in Java and Python/Scala, with a track record of delivering production‑grade code.
- Experience working in a UNIX/Linux shell scripting environment.
- Demonstrated ability to design, build, and maintain large‑scale data pipelines for batch and streaming workloads.
- Excellent problem‑solving abilities, analytical mindset, and strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Google Cloud Platform (GCP) or Amazon Web Services (AWS), including services like BigQuery, Dataflow, or Redshift.
- Knowledge of microservices architecture and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
- Hands‑on experience with Kafka streams or similar event‑driven frameworks.
- Familiarity with NoSQL databases (HBase, Couchbase, MongoDB) and their integration into data pipelines.
- Exposure to machine learning workflows, data science tooling, and model deployment pipelines.
- Prior leadership experience guiding agile squads, conducting sprint planning, and delivering on roadmap commitments.
- Professional certifications in big data, cloud, or data engineering (e.g., Google Cloud Professional Data Engineer, AWS Certified Big Data – Specialty).
