Solar Design Specialist

About This Role SpartanX is seeking a highly skilled Solar Design Specialist to support residential solar design operations across active markets. This role is responsible for creating accurate, code-compliant solar system designs that support engineering, permitting, installation, and customer expectations. The ideal candidate combines strong technical proficiency with leadership abilities, allowing them to not only produce high-quality designs but also support process improvements, mentor team members, and contribute to operational excellence. This position plays a critical role in ensuring projects are designed accurately, efficiently, and in alignment with company standards while supporting scalability across multiple markets.

What You'll Do

Design residential solar PV systems using approved design software and company standards Review site survey data, utility requirements, AHJ requirements, and customer information to create accurate system designs Produce permit-ready plan sets and supporting documentation Ensure designs comply with NEC requirements, utility standards, AHJ requirements, and company specifications Coordinate with engineering, permitting, operations, installation, and sales teams to resolve design-related issues Review project revisions, redesign requests, and correction requirements Assist with troubleshooting design challenges and identifying operational solutions Support quality control initiatives and maintain design accuracy standards Help develop and improve design workflows, procedures, and operational efficiencies Serve as a technical resource for design-related questions and project escalations Assist with training, mentoring, and supporting junior design personnel when needed

Qualifications

Previous residential solar design experience required Strong proficiency with Aurora, Solo, OpenSolar, AutoCAD, or similar solar design platforms Strong technical aptitude and ability to learn new software systems quickly Solid understanding of residential solar PV systems, electrical concepts, and design principles Understanding of NEC requirements, utility interconnection standards, and AHJ requirements Strong organizational and problem-solving skills Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously Professional communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments Demonstrated leadership abilities and willingness to support team development Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality

Preferred Qualifications

NABCEP certification Experience creating permit-ready plan sets Previous leadership, mentoring, or team lead experience AutoCAD experience Engineering support or technical operations experience Experience supporting multi-state solar operations
