Remote Japanese Language Teacher (Adult Classes)

The Seattle Japanese Language School (SJLS) is the oldest operating Japanese language school in the continental United States. Founded in 1902, the school was established to help instill a sense of identity for young Japanese children. Along with language skills, the school was also established to introduce the children to traditional Japanese values, art and culture. Today, the school is run as the premier program of the Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Washington (JCCCW). Job Duties:

• Teach classes online for adults, one 2 hour session, or two 1 hour sessions per assigned class per week over a 10 week program starting from the Winter Quarter beginning in January 2026.
• Classes are offered on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday evenings & on Saturday mornings Seattle time. We will work with your schedule to assign classes.
• Ability and flexibility to teach the Japanese language to a diverse body of students of different skill levels.
• Teach students that learn at different paces.
• Discuss with students and other SJLS teacher the needs, issues and progress of students, and provide assistance in meeting student goals and objectives.
• Follow up on student issues, progress and problems with administrative staff, teachers and others to ensure education needs are being met.
• Recommend to the school principal at the end of the quarter the appropriate level for the student to continue on to for future classes.
• Maintain strong classroom and school culture by clearly and consistently communicating and upholding school rules, values, and expectations during online classes.
• Setting a respectful and positive tone in the classroom.
• Demonstrate exemplary time management to maximize student learning opportunities.
• Building rapport with students that encourages them to continue their Japanese studies and emphasizes their ability to succeed.

Classes offered are dependent upon student demand on a quarterly basis. We will work with teachers to assign classes that suit their schedules. A teacher with teaching one class should expect to work up to around four (4) hours per week; two hours of class time and two hours of prep time/meeting per week during the quarter. Technology:

• Ideally, applicants should know how to: use Microsoft Office, Zoom and/or Google Meet (for Online classes), and Google Suite, especially for email, Docs, Slides, and classrooms.

Requirements:

• A degree from an accredited college or university.
• Experience teaching Japanese in a classroom setting.
• Candidates must be fluent in both English and Japanese, and be knowledgeable about Japanese culture, but need not be a Japanese native speaker.

We are currently seeking teachers to teach in our Summer Quarter, which will begin in late June, 2026. Please note: This is a remote position so we welcome qualified applicants from all over the USA, however, before you apply, please consider that most students reside in the Seattle area and classes on weekday evenings may end as late as 8:45 PM Pacific Time.
