Department Overview The Center for Health Systems Effectiveness (CHSE) is devoted to transforming health systems through actionable cross-disciplinary and collaborative research. Biostatistician 2 works under minimal guidance contributing to the design, data management and validation, analysis, interpretation of results, and presentation of findings for academic health services research projects and policy evaluations. The Biostatistician 3 manages projects and leads the design, data management and validation, analysis, interpretation of results, and presentation of findings for academic health services research projects and policy evaluations. They advise partners (e.g., academic investigators, clinician researchers, government officials, other clients) in the development of research questions and how to leverage available data sources to accomplish research or evaluation objectives. A successful candidate exhibits advanced (Biostatistician 3: deep) knowledge in areas central to the work of CHSE, including: statistical/econometric methods (e.g., differences-in-differences, interrupted time series, propensity scores, machine learning for causal inference); coding in R and possibly other industry-standard programming software (e.g., SQL, Stata, Python, SAS) for data analysis; reproducible research practices and version control; administrative claims data (e.g., Medicaid, Medicare and commercial insurance claims); and health care cost and quality measurement. The role participates in trainings, internal knowledge groups, code review, and process improvement activities, with the Biostatistician 3 often leading these activities. Classification and salary both are commensurate with experience, education and internal equity. Biostatistician 2 salary range is $74,194 - $118,539. Biostatistician 3 salary range is $81,619 - $130,374. Function/Duties of Position

  • Manage, validate and analyze large health insurance claims datasets using appropriate statistical methods.
  • Work under minimal guidance of (Biostatistician 3: in collaboration with) health services and policy investigators to design data analyses, review results, and plan next steps in the analytic process.
  • Biostatistician 2: Draft reports and interpretations of results using statistical, graphical, or other relevant methods.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary investigators to contribute to academic manuscripts and written reports, providing first drafts of sections (Biostatistician 3: drafting sections) independent of guidance.
  • Biostatistician 2: Provide technical support and training to other staff and investigators. Level 3 - Lead in areas of expertise and provide training and support to junior staff.
  • Biostatistician 3: With minimal guidance, interpret and prepare reports of results using statistical, graphical, or other relevant methods.

  • Actively contribute to the review of CHSE working practices and the development of data analysis and management policies.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Health Economics or related field and 3 years of relevant professional experience (Biostatistician 3: 6 years of relevant professional experience) OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of relevant experience (Biostatistician 3: equivalent combination of Bachelor’s degree in conjunction with training and experience may be considered).
  • Experience (Biostatistician 3: Robust experience) working with and maintaining large datasets using R.
  • Biostatistician 2: Strong working knowledge of statistical methods and hypothesis testing, and quantitative analysis methods.
  • Biostatistician 3: Proficiency in a range of research activities including managing, analyzing, and summarizing data; study design; statistical/econometric methods (e.g., differences-in-differences, interrupted time series, propensity scores); policy evaluation. (Preferred for Biostatistician 2).
  • Biostatistician 3: Demonstrated experience in claims data management and analysis, such as Medicaid, Medicare, and private insurance data OR in navigating and interpreting complex administrative data from other governmental agencies (only preferred for Biostatistician 2).
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain thorough documentation of the decision-making process.
  • Strong (Biostatistician 2) or Exemplary (Biostatistician 3) communication skills and ability to effectively present research findings to diverse audiences within and outside OHSU.
  • Strong commitment to rigorous research methods, objectivity and accuracy of findings, and reproducibility of results (with Biostatistician 3 able to articulate this commitment).
  • Knowledge of health disparities and the factors that cause them (only preferred for Biostatistician 2).
  • Successful completion of CHSE task challenge and ability to verbally describe approach and rationale.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience evaluating Medicaid 1115 demonstration waivers and contributing analysis and interpretation to final reports for policymakers.
  • Experience developing and coding healthcare quality and utilization measures from specifications (e.g., HEDIS and AHRQ).
  • Knowledge of Medicaid reform, the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and healthcare payment reform.
  • Working knowledge of SQL, Stata, SAS, Python (deep knowledge for Biostatistician 3).
  • Experience working with diverse populations and in diverse environments.

Additional Details

  • This is a full-time 1.0 position. Hours vary ~40 hrs./week; core hours are 10:00-2:00 PST – very occasional evenings or weekends may be required.
  • May be required to travel or attend out-of-town conferences or meetings occasionally
  • This position has the potential to be fully remote or in Portland, Oregon at OHSU’s South Waterfront campus.
