About the Modern & Classical Language Department
We teach world languages through a Communicative Language Teaching philosophy, allowing students to process language as naturally as possible. Our goals are aligned with those of the American Council on Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). By focusing on culture, we help students not only learn another language, but also understand and respect the people who are native speakers of the language. All of our French and Spanish honors students participate in Le Grand Concours or the National Spanish Exam, respectively.
Requirements
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Teaches content and skills in subject area utilizing designated curriculum and other appropriate learning activities.
- Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the school's basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course standards; provides individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students.
- Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other recordkeeping activities as necessary.
- Evaluates each student's progress in meeting the course standards.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly, productive classroom environment.
- Identifies student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health and attitude problems.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Supervises students in assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day.
- Participates in faculty meetings.
- Administers testing in accordance with testing practices.
- Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
- Possess familiarity with the subject(s) being taught.
- Demonstrate some knowledge of the principles and methodologies of effective teaching.
- Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning, such as Desmos or G Suite for Education (Google Apps) in a 1:1 BYOD environment.
- Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must possess the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Fluent in the target language (Spanish)
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Spanish language, language education, or related field
- Commitment to development of the whole student, in alignment with the Holy Cross tradition of education.
- Experience teaching in a high school, with demonstrated expertise in differentiated instruction.
- Experience using technology to extend and enhance learning, with expertise in synchronous and asynchronous remote instruction.
