Job Description

Assists in the planning, execution, and monitoring of a variety of projects throughout Ohio related to the conservation and recovery of amphibians and reptiles. The position reports to the Amphibian and Reptile Conservation Coordinator. Implements the Ohio Conservation Plan for the Eastern Hellbender and Eastern Massasauga and develops and implements conservation plans for other Ohio species of conservation concern. Specific duties of the position include: surveying and monitoring, including capturing, marking, and measuring animals; collecting samples for genetic analysis and pathogen screening; preparing museum voucher specimens; conducting habitat assessments, including vegetation assessments, water chemistry, zig-zag pebble counts, and QHEI; maintaining and disinfecting field equipment and supplies; leading seasonal staff; working cooperatively with partners, including local, state, and federal agencies, land trusts, zoos, and land owners and managers; developing written conservation plans; preparing and entering data for the Wildlife Diversity Database; conducting literature reviews, analyzing data, and preparing reports, proposals, and manuscripts; presenting findings through presentations and posters at conferences; assisting with administrative duties. Requires extensive travel throughout the state with frequent overnight stays, especially during the field season. Must be an Ohio resident for remote work.

Minimum Education Required

Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.

Required Qualifications

1-3 years of relevant experience required with a minimum of one year experience in conducting surveys or field research with amphibians or reptiles. Ability to work under a variety of adverse conditions, including in cold water and summer heat. Physical ability to lift at least 50 lbs. from the ground and carry bulky field gear up to one mile. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Must have the ability to swim and possess a valid driver’s license.

Desired Experience

Master's Degree preferred. 3+ years of relevant experience preferred. Experience with amphibian and reptile species native to Ohio, especially Hellbenders, Massasaugas, and freshwater turtles. Proficiency with R statistical software.
