Retirement Plan Coordinator or Retirement Plan Consultant

Remote role Full-time Open position

Are you a detail-oriented professional who is passionate about continuous learning, business growth, and long-term career development? Do you enjoy helping organizations and their employees achieve financial wellness and retirement readiness? Gatewood Wealth Solutions, a leading comprehensive wealth management and retirement consulting firm, is seeking a growth-minded, collaborative team member to join our Retirement Plan Consulting Team. Depending on your background, this position can be structured as either a Retirement Plan Coordinator (for early-career professionals) or a Retirement Plan Consultant (for experienced practitioners). You’ll work closely with our advisors, consultants, and investment committee to design, build, and protect the retirement futures of our clients and their employees. Consultant-level professionals will also play a key role in business development and firm growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with consultants, advisors, and the Investment Committee to deliver fiduciary oversight, plan governance, and strategic consulting.
  • Prepare and participate in client meetings, including fiduciary reviews, benchmarking, compliance discussions, and participant education sessions.
  • Manage meeting logistics, take detailed notes, track follow-up items, and ensure accountability across internal and external partners.
  • Develop deep understanding of plan design, ERISA compliance, and recordkeeping operations.
  • Leverage retirement plan tools and reporting systems to generate insights, performance metrics, and benchmarking analyses.
  • Support contribution updates, distributions, and amendments while ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • Identify process improvements and efficiencies that enhance client and participant experiences.
  • Partner with the firm’s Tax & Accounting and Wealth Planning teams to integrate plan design and tax strategies.
  • Assist in business development efforts, RFPs, and relationship management activities.
  • Actively contribute to business development initiatives — including proposal preparation, prospect meetings, and relationship-building with centers of influence (COIs). Consultant-level team members are expected to lead or co-lead business development opportunities and help expand Gatewood’s retirement consulting footprint.
  • Embrace technology, including AI and automation tools, to enhance deliverables and operational efficiency.
  • Participate in special projects that expand your skills and understanding of institutional advisory work.

Core Competencies

  • Detail-oriented mindset with strong organizational and follow-up skills.
  • Growth-minded approach, eager to learn new concepts, pursue credentials, and take on expanding responsibilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Analytical thinker with ability to interpret data and communicate insights clearly.
  • Team-oriented collaborator who thrives in a professional, fast-paced environment.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and process excellence.
  • Adaptable and proactive, comfortable managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong ethical foundation and commitment to fiduciary best practices.
  • Comfort engaging in professional and consultative sales conversations, with a focus on client needs and relationship growth.

Requirements 1. Coordinator Track (Entry to Mid-Level)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business, or related field.
  • 0-3 years of experience in financial services, retirement plans, or related support roles.
  • Familiarity with ERISA, plan design, or recordkeeping a plus.
  • Series 65/66 licensing and additional retirement-related designation encouraged (firm-sponsored if you don’t already hold).
  • Interest in developing client relationship and business development skills over time, with mentorship and exposure to proposal and prospecting efforts.

2. Consultant Track (Experienced Hire)

  • 3–7+ years of experience in retirement plan consulting, recordkeeping, or institutional advisory.
  • Series 65/66 required or obtainable within 6 months.
  • CPFA, AIF®, QKA, or CFP® designation preferred.
  • Proven ability to manage and advise on qualified retirement plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and nurture professional relationships, prospect new clients, and participate confidently in business development and sales conversations.
