International Medical Escort: Paramedic (Level II)

Summary

Objective Responsibilities of the Basic Care Paramedic | Adult include evaluation, coordination, and delivery of medical care provided to patients during all phases of the medical escort. The Basic Care Paramedic | Adult Nursing must be familiar with the scope of practice of the medical escort and the rules and regulations in which the medical escort operates.   • Develops procedures and incentives to promote workplace safety and safe work practices.
  • Maintains continuing quality assessment and improvement analysis of patient care delivery.
  • Ensures compliance with CAMTS standards, including maintaining appropriate medical oversight and ensuring that clinical operations meet accreditation criteria.
  • Participates in establishing policies and procedures that ensure patient rights are respected.
  • Collaborates with administration on the activities and issues of Nursing/Patient Care Services.

Patient Care Responsibilities The following information is provided to assist the Basic Care Registered Nurse | Adult Nursing in understanding the Scope of Services to be provided during a medical transport. Preflight Responsibilities

  • Reviews the Medical Summary provided by the RN Intake Coordinator.
  • Call for an updated patient medical report from the discharging facility/physician (if needed).
  • Assures the medical bag is stocked and that all medical equipment contained within the medical bag is functioning properly.

Medical Escort Responsibilities

  • Communicates condition, acuity and any unusual issues to the Chief Flight Nurse or designee.
  • Performs and documents a complete head-to-toe assessment of the patient.
  • Assures patient has all appropriate documentation, i.e., Passports, Visa’s, before departure from the discharging facility. Contacts the Chief Flight Nurse or designee if any uncertainty or questions exist as to the appropriateness of travel documents.
  • Reviews release forms, waivers, DNR (when appropriate) with the patient and/or family member.
  • Provides Patient’s Rights and Responsibilities to the patient and/or family member and obtains a signature for Consent to Treat prior to leaving the discharging facility.
  • Safeguards all medical records, etc., as per privacy regulations (ex. HIPAA).
  • Assures patient’s medical records and belongings accompany patient.
  • Assist patient through airport security/customs while maintaining continuity of care.
  • Monitors and documents the patient’s condition to include, but not limited to, a head-to-toe assessment with vital signs and pulse oximetry.
  • Assess and document pain according to the appropriate pain scale.
  • Monitors and treats the patient according to protocols, documenting interventions, medications, and response to medications.
  • Assures adherence to universal precautions and initiates additional precautions deemed necessary by disease-specific diagnosis and/or signs and symptoms.
  • Provides a hand-off report to the receiving facility, documenting the date, time, name, and title of the clinician taking the report.

Post-flight responsibilities

  • Completes all medical record documentation pertinent to the medical escort.
  • Assures medical equipment (if applicable) is cleaned and supplies replaced.
  • Communicates quality issues on the Occurrence Report form.

Types of Patients Below are the types of patients that a Basic Care Registered Nurse | Adult Nursing would transport.

  • Non-cardiac (includes controlled hypertension with medication)
  • Non-respiratory (includes controlled asthma with medication)
  • Minor upper and lower extremity fractures
  • Integumentary wounds / dressing changes
  • Drainage devices (includes Foley catheter or ileostomy/colostomy)
  • Diabetic monitoring
  • Dietary and fluid restrictions
  • Medication administration and/or supervision (does not include IV administration)

  • Understands and utilizes chain-of-command and reporting mechanisms.

Qualifications

  • A graduate of an accredited Paramedic (EMT-P) program.
  • Minimum of 2+ years experience in the emergency room.
  • Current BLS/
  • Current licensure in good standing in the State of practice (includes states licensed in but not practicing).
  • Medical Escort "Standards of Care" or equivalent.
  • Valid Passport with no restrictions to travel.

Physical Requirements While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to do the following:

  • Walk and stand for prolonged periods.
  • Assist with transfer and positioning patients of all ages and physical conditions.
  • Utilize visual, auditory, verbal, and olfactory processes required to assess, monitor, and care for patients.
  • Interpret complex laws, regulations, and/or policies.
  • Coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Understand and respond to a diverse population.

Travel

  • Travel depends on patient location and patient destination.

Reporting Relationship

  • Reports directly to the Chief Flight Nurse.
