The Public Health & Policy Internship involves working with leadership to conduct research, develop policies, and implement health interventions aimed at improving mental health and reducing loneliness.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Evidence-Based Research:
  • Review peer-reviewed literature on purpose, loneliness, and health outcomes
  • Analyze existing data from Voice Up's 14+ case studies showing health transformation
  • Identify connections between purpose intervention and specific health metrics
  • Document how authentic connection reduces healthcare utilization and costs
  • Research social determinants of health related to isolation and disconnection
  • Explore health disparities across demographics, cultures, and socioeconomic groups
  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Research connections between athletic participation, identity, and mental health outcomes
  • Investigate mental health challenges specific to athletes (performance anxiety, injury recovery, retirement transition, identity loss)
  • Study sports as intervention for depression, anxiety, and social isolation
  • Analyze barriers to mental health care in athletic communities and stigma reduction strategies
  • Measure Impact & Outcomes:
  • Design research protocols measuring health improvements from Voice Up interventions
  • Develop surveys and assessment tools tracking mental health, physical health, and wellbeing
  • Create data collection systems for ongoing impact measurement
  • Analyze quantitative and qualitative health data
  • Build evidence base demonstrating cost-effectiveness of purpose-based interventions
  • Produce reports showing measurable health transformation
  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Design athlete-specific mental health assessments and screening tools
  • Track mental health outcomes for athletes using purpose-based interventions
  • Measure impact of sports participation on depression, anxiety, and social connection
  • Document athlete transition experiences (retirement, injury, career change) and mental health trajectories
  • Literature Reviews & Meta-Analysis:
  • Synthesize existing research on loneliness, purpose, and chronic disease
  • Identify gaps in current public health approaches to isolation
  • Review successful community health interventions globally
  • Document best practices in preventive health and wellness programs
  • Create annotated bibliographies supporting policy recommendations
  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Review research on athlete mental health, sports psychology, and performance
  • Analyze studies on sports as mental health intervention for general population
  • Examine mental health stigma in athletic culture and successful reduction strategies
  • Research youth sports and psychological development, resilience, and identity formation
  • Policy Development & Advocacy:
  • Create Policy Frameworks:
  • Draft policy briefs connecting purpose intervention to health outcomes
  • Develop recommendations for integrating purpose-based approaches into healthcare systems
  • Write white papers on addressing loneliness as public health priority
  • Create legislative language for purpose and connection initiatives
  • Design policy proposals for funding preventive health interventions

  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Draft policies for mandatory mental health resources in athletic programs (high school, college, professional)
  • Create frameworks for integrating mental health screening in sports medicine

  • Write proposals for funding sports-based mental health interventions in underserved communities
  • Healthcare System Integration:
  • Research how purpose interventions can integrate with existing care models
  • Identify reimbursement pathways for community connection programs

  • Create partnership models between healthcare providers and community organizations

  • Government & Institutional Advocacy:

  • Build relationships with policy organizations focused on mental health and wellness
  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Advocate for NCAA and professional sports league mental health policies
  • Engage with state athletic associations on mental health standards
  • Partner with sports organizations (IOC, Olympic committees, professional leagues) on mental health initiatives
  • Create advocacy materials for youth sports organizations implementing mental health support
  • Program Development & Implementation:
  • Design Health Interventions:

  • Community Health Partnerships:
  • Identify potential partner organizations (nonprofits, health systems, universities)
  • Develop collaboration frameworks for program implementation
  • Create resource materials for community-based health initiatives
  • Design pilot programs testing intervention effectiveness
  • Build evaluation systems tracking health outcomes in real-world settings
  • SPORTS & MENTAL HEALTH FOCUS: Partner with athletic departments, sports teams, and leagues on mental health initiatives

  • Educational Resource Development:

  • Multilingual abilities highly valued (Spanish, French, Mandarin, Korean, Arabic, Portuguese, etc.)
  • Familiarity with social determinants of health and health equity frameworks
  • Portfolio of research papers, policy briefs, or health communications work
