We are now seeking a highly skilled and motivated Graduate Writing Consultant to join our team at UNT Dallas as a Work-Study Graduate Writing Consultant (Tutor). This part-time, remote-friendly role offers a unique opportunity to work with a diverse student body, develop your tutoring skills, and contribute to the academic success of our students.

About the Role

As a Graduate Writing Consultant, you will play a vital role in the UNT Dallas Learning Commons, providing tutorial assistance in writing to students who need supplemental academic support. You will work under the supervision of administrative staff and collaborate with other Writing Consultants to deliver high-quality tutoring services to students through face-to-face and online consultations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work with students to develop positive learning skills, such as critical thinking, analytical skills, research skills, and effective written communication.
  • Provide a forum for participatory learning, actively involving students in the tutoring process.
  • Aid students in understanding concepts without rewriting papers or completing assignments for them.
  • Refer students to Learning Commons resources and other academic services as needed.
  • Maintain detailed student records via WCOnline for data collection purposes.
  • Assist administrative staff and professional tutors with special assignments, projects, and events.
  • Develop and prepare resources for the Learning Commons, including handouts, workshops, website content, social media posts, and videos.
  • Interpret and clarify Learning Commons procedures to students, tutors, and visitors, and lead classroom presentations to promote our services.
  • Work the assigned hours per week, unless prior arrangements have been made with your supervisor.
  • Attend and complete mandatory trainings to enhance your skills and knowledge.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this role, you must meet the following minimum qualifications:

  • Be a currently enrolled University of North Texas at Dallas student making satisfactory progress toward completion of a master's degree program.
  • Qualify for work-study eligibility, as determined by the Financial Aid office.
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Be recommended by a faculty member who can attest to your writing skills (recommendation must be in email format).
  • Possess intermediate to advanced knowledge of English composition, grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior tutoring experience (not required but preferred).
  • Knowledge of University academic policy, procedure, and practices (or ability to rapidly assimilate and retain this knowledge).
  • Familiarity with FERPA (not required but preferred).
  • Ability to work 12-19 hours per week.
  • Strong ability to work independently and make decisions within the framework of broad goals and objectives.

  • Excellent interpersonal and intercultural communication skills.
  • Empathy and ability to relate to the diverse student body population at UNT Dallas.
  • Effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Skill in telephone etiquette and courteous communication with the public, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic MS Office skills and ability to operate various office machines, including personal computers, telephones, and copiers.
  • Ability to use web-based software (such as Zoom) to tutor students online.
  • Skill in filing and recordkeeping.

Compensation, Perks, and Benefits

This part-time role offers a competitive hourly rate of $12.00 per hour.
